Thanks to all the compromises the Dems put in to appease the Republicans, on top of essentially having to ram rod it through the house because the Republicans tried their level damnedest to obstruct the bill it's a giant pile of "meh". McCain and the rest of the GOP have flat out stated they're going to do everything in their power to keep this from making it past the Senate, so I really don't expect much of anything to come of it, especially considering that the Dems pretty much lack the spine to fight back.

As someone who grew up with socialized medicine, I see very few positives in this move.
Not to say that some good things were not included, cant drop you if you get sick, cant not cover you for pre-existing conditions, but anyone that thinks that this will not lower the quality of health care for all but the rich, is fooling themselves.

See, you say it will lower the quality of care for the general public, but every example of a western first world nation that has socialized medicine you can think of says different. I mean, if socialized medicine is so bad and the quality is so low, then why is it that the UK, Canada, and France all have higher average life expectancies and lower infant mortality rates than we do? Even better, why is it that they have a better quanitity and quality of life medically yet they don't pay anywhere near the per capita costs for health care that we do?
Once again, I'm forced to say that you don't know what you're talking about. Again.

Since Pants and Spitfire have failed tp respond to my challenge for a health debate maybe DC will be prepared to compare the present US system with the NHS.
If you want to take up the challenge DC, here's the thread

Well, as someone that has spent the last 2 years dealing with the current run US govt health care, I can say fist hand it is SHIT!!
It sucks. It is full of individuals that couldnt give a shit, pushing paper around while people get sick, suffer, cant get meds, cant get treatment, all because they dont have all the Is dotted or Ts crossed, and damm if it matters how sick or bad off the person is.
I blame a large part of this on how totally inept the US govt is at running any orginization.
The only US Govt run org that is worth anything, is the US military.
And Whipsy, I have heard from quite a few canadians, that come to the DC area ghospitials for medical care that the would have suffered devistating affects, or even died, before they would have made it to the top of the waiting lists for treatment. It is actually very common to sit and talk with them in DC hospitals, which sadly, I have spent far to much time in recently due to several sick friends I have been trying to help.
I have great health care, this whole thing pretty much has no affect on me, but I have seen how VERY poorly the current State/Fed run system is, and I cant see it getting any better, when it gets even larger, and easier to abuse.
Glad to hear the UK system is better, Whispy.
I am not knocking socalized medicine, just US Govt run medical care.

And which system would this be? Tricare, Medicade? I regularly deal with the Veterans Administration and instead of finding people that don't care or are incompetent, I find a bunch of people who are horribly understaffed and underbudgeted.

Which I find odd considereding I've had first hand experience with two different government socialized medical systems, and both of them provided first rate service. Hell, in some cases I actually received better service then I would from a for profit provider.

I've got first hand experience with military medicine both as a patient and as a practicioner. I've had better service and quality of care with Army medicine then I've ever received from civilian medicine.

The only other option is to allow the current for profit system to continue and for more and more Americans to be forced to have no health care at all. I'd rather deal with a bureaucracy that gives care then a corporate hospital that refuses to serve you unless you have an immediate life threatening emergency and then proceeds to massively over bill you for that.

What's the alternative? Oh, right, the current system we have where almost 1/3 of our citizens have little or no access to medical care at all.

If I made a list of people who have told me that the US does EVEYTHING better than every other country on the planet you'd be at the top of that list DC.
So why is it that, when the NHS costs UK citizens 40% of what US citizens pay for health care, the US can't implement either 1) a slightly better system than the NHS at the same cost as the UK or 2) a system which overcomes the few deficiences of the NHS at the same as the current US cost?

Congrats USA on your attempt to make another record...
U.S. marks 3rd-largest, single-day debt increase
The nation's debt leapt $166 billion in a single day last week, the third-largest increase in U.S. history, and it comes at a time when Congress is balking over higher spending and debt has become a key policy battleground.
The one-day increase for June 30 totaled $165,931,038,264.30 - bigger than the entire annual deficit for fiscal year 2007 and larger than the $140 billion in savings the new health care bill will produce over its first 10 years. The figure works out to nearly $1,500 for every U.S. household, or more than 10 times the median daily household income.

166 BILLION in just ONE day ...
That's about 2 MILLION per SECOND !!!
Congrats !!!

But DC is right Whispy...
The US still does EVERYTHING better then every other country on the planet !!!
In 2010 the U.S. government is projected to issue almost as much new debt as the rest of the governments of the world combined.
YOU SEE !!!

Too bad Australia lots its decent health care. someone I know had a sick baby the other day. Fever of 40C and they took it to hospital. They were left (@ 1am!) waiting for 3 hours then she went and said "look DO SOEMTHING!" and they gave her a panadol.
These stories are getting way more common now and my last experience @ a hospital was not good either. This is Howards doing and Rudd didnt fix it and that woman is friggin racist like Howard so no change there either.
Oops got a bit off topic there - I had to babysit the sick baby for a couple hours while the mother tried to find some help so I am angry.
